“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:1-2 NKJV).
The Holy Spirit is here to work. He works in us both to will and to do according to the good pleasure of our Father (Philippians 2:13). He works in us so we can work with Him. Primal to all He is assigned to do in us, for us, and with us is to impart and sustain God’s life in all of God’s children. The Holy Spirit is the life-giving Spirit. Elihu was right when he said to Job; “The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life” (Job 33:4 NKJV). Whatever we know and experience as life on earth is the work of the Holy Spirit. It was only after He entered the man that God formed out of the dust of the earth that it became a living being (Genesis 2:7). When Satan shot himself in the foot by killing Jesus, the Holy Spirit, being the life-giving Spirit, made Him alive again and got Him out of the grave. The apostle Peter testified, “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit” (1 Peter 3:18 NKJV). The Holy Spirit is always on the side of life. He works in diametric opposition to the devil, who is the author of death. Whereas the devil is here to steal, to kill and to destroy, the Holy Spirit, being the “Spirit of Jesus Christ,” is here to give us life and that more abundantly (John 10:10). Our Lord described the Holy Spirit as the Living Water bubbling in the hearts of those who believe in Him (John 4:14). This Living Water was poured out on believers for all humankind on the day of the Pentecost. We must let Him flow to give life to all around us. But the well must first become a river if it must affect lives.
Holy Spirit gives life, frees from sin. Let Living Water flow through you – refresh others, impart life, and bless in Jesus’ name.
A popular song during the early days of the charismatic movement goes this way: “Spirit is flowing like a river, flowing out of you and me; flowing out into the desert, setting all the captives free.” Our Lord employed two metaphors of water in describing the work of the Holy Spirit in people. While conversing with the woman of Samaria He said to her, “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:14 KJV). Here our Lord describes the action of the Holy Spirit at conversion. He comes into the believer as a “well of water” or a fountain of water. He serves as the source of spiritual life in God that the convert now enjoys. The water in the well or fountain is stagnant and is not readily available for the use of others, unless one goes to draw from it. Then our Lord later spoke of the Holy Spirit as “rivers of living water.” “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified” (John 7:38-39 NKJV). Here He describes the action of the Holy Spirit at the baptism with the Holy Spirit. The well of water at conversion is now turned into rivers of living waters flowing out of the heart of the believer in miracles, signs and wonders, and spiritual gifts to bless people around. A river is a moving body of water. It is a natural watercourse, usually freshwater, that flows out and refreshes all life along its path.

When the Holy Spirit comes upon you, He frees you from your limitations so He can flow through you to refresh people around you. He sets you free from the condemnation of the law of sin and death and introduces you to the law of the Spirit of life in Christ. Paul therefore affirms “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.” The law of sin and death brings condemnation and fosters sin consciousness in people. The law of the Spirit of life in Christ frees you from every condemnation and enables you to see your completeness in Christ (Colossians 2:9-10). Besides, the Holy Spirit gives life to your mortal bodies (Romans 8:11) and enables you to be free of diseases and sicknesses according to what Christ had accomplished for us in redemption. The grand purpose of God in all these is for us to serve as channels of His blessings to the needy world. The rivers of living water must be allowed to flow out so people can taste of the goodness of God and be drawn to Him because knowing the goodness of God leads to repentance. Let the Spirit of life flow through you to impart life to others in Jesus name.
